Ingredients

2 ribeye steaks (about 1 inch thick)

1 can (15 oz) crushed tomatoes

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

3 garlic cloves, minced

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon red chili flakes (adjust for spice)

2 tablespoons olive oil

Salt and pepper to taste

1/2 cup fresh basil leaves, roughly chopped

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Zest of 1 lemon

Instructions

Prepare the Steaks: Season both sides of the ribeye steaks generously with salt and pepper. Let them sit at room temperature while you prepare the sauce.

Cook the Onions: In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until they are soft and translucent, about 5-6 minutes.

Add Garlic and Spices: Stir in the minced garlic, oregano, and red chili flakes. Cook for an additional minute until fragrant, taking care not to burn the garlic.

Make the Sauce: Pour the crushed tomatoes into the skillet and stir to combine everything. Let the sauce simmer for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Sear the Steaks: In a separate pan (preferably cast iron), heat a small amount of olive oil over high heat. Once hot, add the steaks and sear for about 3-4 minutes on each side for medium-rare (adjust cooking time to your preference).

Combine and Simmer: Once seared, transfer the steaks into the skillet with the tomato sauce. Spoon some sauce over the steaks and let them simmer in the sauce for 5 additional minutes.

Finishing Touches: Sprinkle fresh basil over the steak and sauce. If using, add grated Parmesan cheese for extra flavor and richness. Add a bit of lemon zest to brighten the dish.

Serve: Plate the steaks and drizzle with the sauce, making sure to add the onions and tomatoes on top.

                  Prep Time: 10 mins | Total Time: 35 mins | Servings: 2

                    - Presentation Tips: Serve the steak on a rustic wooden board with a side of garlic bread or over a bed of creamy polenta. Garnish with additional fresh basil and a wedge of lemon for a pop of color.
