Ingredients

1 lb ground beef or turkey

1 small onion, diced

1 small green bell pepper, diced

1 cup ketchup

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

2 tablespoons brown sugar

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon chili powder

Salt and pepper to taste

8 slices of bread (your choice: sourdough, whole wheat, or white)

8 slices of cheddar cheese

4 tablespoons butter (for grilling)

Instructions

In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef or turkey. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.

Add the diced onion and bell pepper to the skillet. Sauté for about 3-4 minutes until the vegetables are softened.

Stir in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, garlic powder, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well and simmer on low heat for 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the mixture to thicken.

Meanwhile, heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium-low heat.

Take two slices of bread and place a slice of cheddar cheese on each. Spoon a generous amount of the Sloppy Joe mixture over the cheese, then top with another slice of cheese and another slice of bread to close the sandwich.

Butter the outer sides of the sandwich generously. Repeat with the remaining ingredients to make more sandwiches.

Place the sandwiches on the heated skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.

Remove from the skillet, slice in half, and serve immediately, with any remaining Sloppy Joe filling as a side for dipping, if desired.

                  Prep Time: 15 minutes | Total Time: 30 minutes | Servings: 4
