Ingredients

4 ripe bananas, sliced

1 package (12 oz) vanilla wafers

2 cups whole milk

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/3 cup cornstarch

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

4 large egg yolks

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 cup heavy whipping cream

2 tablespoons powdered sugar

Extra vanilla wafers and banana slices for garnish

Instructions

Prepare the Pudding Base: In a medium saucepan, whisk together the granulated sugar, cornstarch, and salt. Slowly add the whole milk, whisking until smooth. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens, about 5-7 minutes.

Add Egg Yolks: In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks until smooth. Gradually add a small amount of the hot pudding mixture to the yolks, whisking vigorously to temper the eggs. Then pour the tempered yolks back into the saucepan with the pudding mixture.

Flavor the Pudding: Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly until thickened. Remove from heat and stir in the butter and vanilla extract until well combined. Transfer the pudding to a bowl, cover with plastic wrap (pressing it directly against the surface to prevent a skin), and let cool to room temperature.

Whip the Cream: In a large mixing bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the heavy whipping cream and powdered sugar until soft peaks form. Set aside.

Assemble the Pudding: In a trifle dish or individual cups, layer the vanilla wafers, sliced bananas, and the cooled pudding. Repeat layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with pudding on top.

Top with Whipped Cream: Spread the whipped cream over the top layer of pudding. For added texture, crush a few vanilla wafers and sprinkle on top, and arrange banana slices decoratively.

Chill: Refrigerate the banana pudding for at least 4 hours or overnight to allow flavors to meld and the wafers to soften.
