Ingredients

1 large French baguette

2 large onions, thinly sliced

4 cloves garlic, minced

1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 teaspoon sugar

1 teaspoon dried thyme

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and sauté for about 5 minutes.

Sprinkle the sugar, salt, and thyme over the onions to help with caramelization. Reduce the heat to low and cook the onions for 20-25 minutes, stirring frequently until they are golden brown and sweet. Add minced garlic during the last 2 minutes of cooking. Remove from heat and set aside.

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Slice the French baguette in half lengthwise. Spread the softened butter evenly over both halves.

Evenly distribute the caramelized onion and garlic mixture over the buttered bread.

Sprinkle mozzarella cheese and then Parmesan cheese generously over the top.

Place the prepared bread halves on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

For an extra crispy finish, broil for an additional 2-3 minutes, watching closely to prevent burning.

Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley before slicing into serving pieces.
