Ingredients

1 round loaf of Italian bread (about 10 inches in diameter)

1/2 cup marinated olive salad (store-bought or homemade)

4 ounces mortadella, thinly sliced

4 ounces salami, thinly sliced

4 ounces provolone cheese, sliced

4 ounces ham, thinly sliced

2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

1 clove garlic, minced

Black pepper, to taste

Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Bread: Slice the round loaf of Italian bread in half horizontally. Make sure to keep the top and bottom intact to hold the fillings.

Make the Olive Salad: If making homemade olive salad, mix together pitted green and black olives, diced celery, minced garlic, a splash of red wine vinegar, and a drizzle of olive oil. Let it marinate for at least 30 minutes to meld the flavors.

Layer the Meats and Cheese: On the bottom half of the bread, layer mortadella, salami, ham, and provolone cheese. Be generous with the layers!

Add the Olive Salad: Spread the marinated olive salad evenly on top of the layered meats and cheese. Drizzle the extra-virgin olive oil over the olive salad and sprinkle with minced garlic and black pepper for extra flavor.

Add Fresh Basil: If using, place some fresh basil leaves over the olive salad for a fresh aroma.

Close the Sandwich: Place the top half of the bread back onto the sandwich and press down gently to compact the layers.

Wrap and Chill: Wrap the sandwich tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, ideally overnight. This helps the flavors to meld.

Serve: When ready to serve, unwrap the sandwich and cut it into wedges or quarters. Use a sharp knife to get through the layered ingredients cleanly.
