Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • 1 cup Swiss cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup mushrooms, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • as needed burger buns
  • as needed lettuce, tomato, and pickles for topping
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil for sautéing

Instructions

  1. In a skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onions and cook until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  2. Add the minced garlic and chopped mushrooms to the skillet. Sauté until the mushrooms release their moisture and become tender, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, sautéed mushroom mixture, Worcestershire sauce, black pepper, and salt. Mix gently until just combined; be careful not to overwork the meat.
  4. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into a flat patty. In the center of each patty, place about 1/4 cup of shredded Swiss cheese.
  5. Fold the edges of the patty around the cheese, sealing it in completely. Reshape to ensure a uniform patty.
  6. Preheat your grill or a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the burgers for about 5-6 minutes on each side for medium doneness, or until they reach your desired level of doneness.
  7. During the last minute of cooking, toast the burger buns on the grill or skillet until golden.
  8. Once cooked, remove the burgers from the heat and let them sit for a couple of minutes to allow the cheese to melt properly.
  9. Assemble the burgers on toasted buns and top with lettuce, tomato slices, and pickles as desired.

💡 Chef's Notes

Let the burgers rest for a few minutes after cooking to enhance the flavor.
