Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 for optimal flavor)
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 small green bell pepper, diced
  • 4 slices American cheese (or your favorite cheese)
  • 4 hoagie rolls or personal-sized hero rolls
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • to taste salt and pepper
  • as needed cooking oil for sautéing
  • optional lettuce, tomato, pickles for garnishing

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, add a drizzle of cooking oil. Once hot, add the diced onions and green bell pepper. Sauté for about 3-4 minutes, until they are soft and fragrant.
  2. Increase the heat to medium-high, add the ground beef to the skillet, and break it up with a spatula. Season with salt and pepper. Cook until the beef is browned and fully cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. While the beef is cooking, use your spatula to chop the mixture into smaller pieces while stirring. This helps integrate the veggies into the meat.
  4. Once the beef is browned, lower the heat to medium. Place the slices of cheese on top of the meat mixture. Cover the skillet with a lid for about 2 minutes, allowing the cheese to melt.
  5. While the cheese is melting, slice the hoagie rolls lengthwise but not all the way through (creating a hinge). Toast them lightly on a separate skillet or under a broiler for 1-2 minutes if desired.
  6. Spread mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard inside each toasted roll. Spoon the chopped cheese mixture generously into each roll, ensuring each has a good amount of the melted cheese and veggies.
  7. Optional – add lettuce, tomato slices, and pickles on top of the meat mixture for added freshness and crunch. Close the sandwiches and enjoy while hot!

💡 Chef's Notes

Serve the sandwiches on a wooden cutting board, wrapped in parchment paper for a street-food feel.
