Chopped Cheese Sandwich Delightful and Easy Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20 for optimal flavor)
- 1 small onion, diced
- 1 small green bell pepper, diced
- 4 slices American cheese (or your favorite cheese)
- 4 hoagie rolls or personal-sized hero rolls
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- to taste salt and pepper
- as needed cooking oil for sautéing
- optional lettuce, tomato, pickles for garnishing
Instructions
- In a large skillet over medium heat, add a drizzle of cooking oil. Once hot, add the diced onions and green bell pepper. Sauté for about 3-4 minutes, until they are soft and fragrant.
- Increase the heat to medium-high, add the ground beef to the skillet, and break it up with a spatula. Season with salt and pepper. Cook until the beef is browned and fully cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.
- While the beef is cooking, use your spatula to chop the mixture into smaller pieces while stirring. This helps integrate the veggies into the meat.
- Once the beef is browned, lower the heat to medium. Place the slices of cheese on top of the meat mixture. Cover the skillet with a lid for about 2 minutes, allowing the cheese to melt.
- While the cheese is melting, slice the hoagie rolls lengthwise but not all the way through (creating a hinge). Toast them lightly on a separate skillet or under a broiler for 1-2 minutes if desired.
- Spread mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard inside each toasted roll. Spoon the chopped cheese mixture generously into each roll, ensuring each has a good amount of the melted cheese and veggies.
- Optional – add lettuce, tomato slices, and pickles on top of the meat mixture for added freshness and crunch. Close the sandwiches and enjoy while hot!
