Ingredients

  • 4 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 0.5 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 0.5 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
  • 0.5 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 serving Vanilla ice cream for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and place a 10-inch cast-iron skillet in the oven to warm.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss until apples are well coated.
  3. In another bowl, create the crisp topping by mixing together the rolled oats and flour. Add the cold cubed butter and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to blend until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. If using, stir in the chopped nuts at this stage.
  4. Remove the hot skillet from the oven and add the apple mixture, spreading it evenly across the bottom.
  5. Evenly sprinkle the oatmeal topping over the apples.
  6. Return the skillet to the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the apples are bubbly and the topping is golden brown.
  7. Five minutes before serving, drizzle caramel sauce over the top and return to the oven for an additional 5 minutes to warm the sauce.
  8. Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving.

💡 Chef's Notes

Serve warm directly from the skillet with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top and an extra drizzle of caramel sauce for added sweetness.
