Ingredients

  • 4 large sourdough bread bowls
  • 1 lb ground beef or turkey
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup diced green bell pepper
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce (non-alcoholic)
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • to taste salt and pepper
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • for garnish fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef or turkey. Break it apart with a spatula as it cooks, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Once the meat is browned, add the chopped onion, garlic, and green bell pepper. Cook for an additional 3-4 minutes until the vegetables are softened.
  4. Stir in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, chili powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix well and let it simmer for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  5. While the mixture simmers, prepare the sourdough bread bowls. You can carefully hollow out the center of each bread bowl, leaving some bread at the bottom to hold the filling.
  6. Once the sloppy joe filling is ready, remove it from the heat and spoon it generously into each bread bowl.
  7. Top the filled bread bowls with shredded cheddar cheese and place them on a baking sheet.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for about 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  9. Once done, remove from the oven and let it cool for a minute before garnishing with freshly chopped parsley.
  10. Serve warm and enjoy the fun of scooping out the flavorful filling with the bread!
