Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.25 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
  • 0.5 cup warm milk (110°F/43°C)
  • 0.25 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1 cup apple pie filling (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 0.5 cup brown sugar
  • 0.25 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 0.5 cup powdered sugar (for icing)
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons milk (for icing)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, melted butter, egg, and salt. Add the yeast mixture once it's bubbly. Mix until a dough forms, then knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth.
  3. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  4. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out into a rectangle (about 12x18 inches).
  5. Spread softened butter evenly over the dough. In a bowl, mix brown sugar and cinnamon, then sprinkle over the buttered dough.
  6. Gently spoon the apple pie filling evenly across the dough, then drizzle lemon juice over the top for freshness.
  7. Starting from one edge, tightly roll the dough into a log. Slice into 12 equal pieces and place them in a greased baking dish.
  8. Cover and let the rolls rise again for 30 minutes. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  9. Bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar and milk to make the icing. Adjust consistency if needed. Drizzle over warm cinnamon rolls before serving.
